End Stage Renal Disease

What is end stage renal disease?

The last stage (stage five) of chronic kidney disease is called end stage kidney disease. During this stage, the patient's kidneys are only functioning at approximately 10 to 15 percent of capacity. When chronic kidney disease develops into end stage renal disease, dialysis or a kidney transplant is necessary.

Your body's functions affected by end stage kidney disease include:

  • Urine Production
  • Electrolyte levels
  • Hormone production
  • Enzyme production, resulting in high blood pressure

Regular dialysis treatment, following your renal diet and taking prescribed medications can go a long way in managing end stage renal disease. If you have been diagnosed with end stage renal disease, it is important to follow your health care team's advices regarding treatment.
