Ankle Pain

What is ankle pain?

Did you know the average person walks about 100,000 miles in a lifetime? Just think of the wear and tear on your feet and ankles. When you injure your feet and ankles, you may experience:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Instability (your feet and ankles cannot support you)
  • Stiffness
  • Hear a popping or snapping sound
  • Numbness

The stability of the ankle joint is dependent upon the ability of the tibia, the large leg bone, and the fibula, the smaller bone on the outside of the ankle, to keep the ankle's central bone, the talus, in place while the ankle moves backwards and forwards.

Ankle pain treatments

Physical Therapy

Each inpatient and outpatient physical therapy rehab is individually designed and administered by a licensed physical therapist who consistently guides you from that first visit all the way through recovery.

Ankle Fusion Surgery

Ankle fusion, also called ankle arthrodesis, is a surgical option for arthritis in the ankle, usually the result of traumatic injury to the foot or ankle.

Ankle Joint Replacement

As an alternative to ankle fusion, which locks the joint in a fixed position and does not permit ankle motion, ankle replacement replaces the arthritic surfaces with metal and plastic low-friction implants.
