Bryn Mawr Hospital Gift Opportunities

Bryn Mawr Hospital

Since its founding in 1893, Bryn Mawr Hospital has been sustained by the generosity of the community it serves. The hospital relies on the philanthropic partnership of its patients, family members and friends to fund programs and services that patient revenue alone cannot support. Below are available gift opportunities that will enhance the hospital's clinical capabilities, patient experience initiatives, research efforts and educational programs. Multi-year commitments of $25,000 or more may be fulfilled over a period of up to five years.

To learn more about any of these opportunities, please contact the Bryn Mawr Hospital Foundation.

Top Fundraising Priorities for FY24

Da Vinci Xi robot-assisted surgical systems

$1,500,000 one-time need

Robotic surgery has transformed healthcare by providing surgeons with enhanced precision and dexterity during procedures, leading to reduced complications and faster patient recovery. Its minimally invasive nature has expanded access to specialized surgical care and improved patient outcomes. Since 2021, robotic procedures have increased by 56 percent at Bryn Mawr Hospital, and trends show explosive growth in the program while other surgical modalities are on the decline. Our current robot is being used to its full capacity by 15 surgeons from various surgical specialties including general surgery, urology, GYN surgery, thoracic surgery, bariatric surgery, and colorectal surgery. Additional surgical systems would allow us to treat a higher volume of patients, decrease wait times for surgical procedures, train all surgical residents more efficiently, add more specialties to our program and enhance our physician recruitment efforts.

Unrestricted Support

$1,000,000+ annual need

COVID-19 placed a significant financial strain on hospitals worldwide due to increased labor costs and expenses, while patient revenue and reimbursements have decreased or remained flat. Healthcare institutions continue to grapple with the long-term financial impacts of the pandemic as they work to recover and adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape. Unrestricted support provides Bryn Mawr Hospital with the flexibility to allocate current resources where they are most needed at any given time.

Other Fundraising Priorities/Opportunities for FY24

Oncology Nurse Navigators

$400,000+ annual need

All BMH patients are assigned a nurse navigator at no cost to our patients and families. Nurse navigators guide patients and families through the cancer continuum acting as liaison, educator, and patient advocate, making the cancer care experience easier and less overwhelming. Navigators help coordinate appointments, tests, and procedures, and facilitate ongoing support for patients, whether newly diagnosed, in active treatment or receiving follow-up care. The services navigators provide are non-billable meaning that the hospital does not receive any reimbursement for this essential layer of support.

Technology and Equipment

$250,000+ annual need

Bryn Mawr Hospital is a hub for superior patient care and surgical excellence rivaling academic medical centers, strengthened by continued investment in technology and equipment. Advancements in treatment modalities, rapid growth in our patient volumes and expansion of our teaching programs all contribute in one way or another to the demand for new and additional technology. This past year especially, philanthropy has had a transformative effect on Bryn Mawr Hospital’s ability to purchase equipment that may have otherwise been deferred or denied due to a shortage of operational dollars. Purchases that have already been made possible this year entirely through charitable giving include a robotic surgical console for our urology and surgery residents to use, new high-tech 3D specimen breast imaging equipment, Labor and Delivery stretchers, NICU and pediatric beds, milk warmers and resuscitation devices in the NICU, pediatric EEG equipment for neurological assessments, and more.

Echocardiogram Technology Upgrade in the Cardiac Cath Lab

$170,000 one-time need

Bryn Mawr Hospital interventional cardiologists provide state-of-the-art cardiovascular care to patients through advanced treatments and minimally invasive procedures. Upgrades to the current echocardiogram imaging systems used in the Cath Lab would add 3D capabilities to the machines, as well as incorporate the use of Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) probes and software. These imaging upgrades can help our physicians better evaluate valve infection and the severity of valve dysfunction before cardioversion (heart shocking) and assess for congenital heart disease.

Clinical Research and Trials Coordination

$150,000 annual need

Many of today’s medical advances are the direct result of clinical studies and because of the diligent work of researchers. Clinical researchers and coordinators enroll BMH patients in clinical research trials, managing patients for the duration of their trial, ensuring adherence to protocols, following up with patients’ post-trial and performing data analysis. At any given time, we have about 100+ patients enrolled in cardiology and oncology clinical trials at BMH.

NICU Beds and Bedside Equipment

$10,000 - $100,000 ongoing need

Infants receiving care in our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit require specific beds depending on their age, size, acuity, and developmental progress. With increasing patient volumes and our new partnership with CHOP, BMH has the need to purchase a variety of replacement and additional beds for varied acuities of care, from the most complex “Giraffe” bed controlling every aspect of the baby’s environment and costing approx. $90,000, to a simple bassinet costing approx. $5,000.

Graduate Medical Education Programs

$100,000+ annual need

BMH proudly participates in educating the next generation of physicians through its own residency and fellowship programs as well as hosting residents and fellows from other organizations who rotate through BMH as part of their training experience. Receiving care at a teaching institution benefits patient by way of access to physicians who are at the top of their field, more innovative treatments, and additional oversight and rounding during care experiences. Graduates have frequently established their practices and built careers at BMH following the completion of their training. These programs – spanning family medicine, urology, cardiology, surgery, breast cancer and more come at a cost of hundreds of thousands to BMH annually. Gifts would support graduate medical education at BMH and give the programs flexibility in their recruitment endeavors and operating budgets.

Emergency Department IV Carts

$80,000 one-time need

BMH’s IV carts provide secure storage of needles, tubing and other IV supplies utilized in almost every Emergency Department patient visit. These carts are nearing their recommended end of life. Funds would provide for 40 replacement IV carts throughout the ED.

Patient Financial Assistance

$50,000+ annual need

Assistance funds are used to support uninsured and underinsured patients access care, including screening and diagnostic imaging, anesthesia and other procedural services, prescription costs and transportation. Our care coordination teams work closely to identify inpatients whose socio-economic factors may prevent a safe and timely discharge and transition to outpatient care. Assistance funds have supported a myriad of patients from all walks of life including Ukrainian refugees, domestic violence victims, patients with no local support systems, and the homeless.

Motorized Labor & Delivery Stretchers

$40,000 one-time need (2 stretchers)

Stretchers are essential for transporting laboring mothers to the unit and into the C-Section suite. On occasion, patients have delivered on stretchers, making for very specific stretcher model requirements. Two of BMH’s five L&D stretchers are in need of replacement and enhancement to better suit the unique patient and staff needs of this increasingly busy department.

Palliative Care Program

$35,000+ annual need

Bryn Mawr’s Palliative Care team is a critical resource for patients and loved ones alike. In addition to helping navigate complex and chronic illnesses and the transition to end of life care, the palliative care team is held in high regard for their specialized support in adult and child bereavement, meeting the needs of those with financial hardships, and making memorable moments for families – from graduation ceremonies and weddings to recreating a bowling alley experience for one patient’s final game.

Pediatric Nurse Educator

$25,000+ annual need

Nurse educators are instrumental in shaping the future of healthcare. They not only help nursing students develop the technical skills that they need to be successful in their careers, but they also help practicing nurses enhance their skills, knowledge, and expertise. At Bryn Mawr Hospital, we have a partnership with Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) to treat pediatric patients where we rely on the NICU and ED nurse educators for evidence-based practice teachings. Pediatrics is a very specific patient population with unique needs and the age range spans various developmental and cognitive ranges. It would benefit our nursing staff and our pediatric patients to contract with a pediatric nurse educator from CHOP to provide part time evidence-based teaching and learning implementation to our pediatric nurses at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Food Insecurity Program

$25,000+ annual need

Bryn Mawr Hospital launched a program aimed at reducing health and wellness inequities by providing fresh fruit and vegetables to food insecure patients of Bryn Mawr Family Practice. We also began to screen for food insecure patients in the Emergency Department, providing them with complimentary, healthy meals and information on obtaining longer-term food assistance upon discharge. With additional funding, we can expand our efforts to include screening our inpatient population and ensure that the program reaches more food insecure patients for a greater amount of time.

Mother/Baby Equipment

$25,000+ ongoing need

Bryn Mawr Hospital continues to experience record setting birth rates with the recent closures of maternity units in our region and a new OB practice joining our medical staff. Projections show volumes increasing further in the year ahead. With this continued growth in delivery rates, BMH is seeking to purchase additional equipment for our Labor & Delivery and Maternity units – from bilimeters and baby scales to instruments and monitors – to relieve some of the burden of shared resources in short supply.

Named endowment to support approved area of your choosing

$25,000 minimum

Endowments supply funding in perpetuity to support programs and services that the Hospital will always need to provide. Subject to a conservative, Board-approved spending rule applied on the fund, endowments of $25,000 - $50,000 typically generate from $750 to $1,500 in annual support.

Bridge Milk Program for Well Babies

$20,000+ annual need

Expanding on the success of our Human Milk Program in the NICU, BMH has recently rolled out a Bridge Milk Program for well-babies on the maternity unit. This new initiative offers families seeking to exclusively breastfeed access to supplementary donor milk in circumstances where babies may not be receiving adequate supply from their mother due to issues with latching and feeding, the mother’s condition or the baby’s condition. Funds will offset the expenses for Bryn Mawr to purchase human donor breast milk and offer it to patients free-of-charge during their brief stay on the maternity unit.

Music Therapy

$15,000 annual need

A certified music therapist plays the harp in hospital areas including surgical recovery, intensive care, patient rooms, family lounges and other public spaces. This complementary service has been shown to reduce stress and enhance recovery.

Healing touch program

$15,000 annual need

Therapeutic massages are provided at no cost to patients undergoing cancer treatment, as part of the Hospital’s commitment to a holistic and integrative approach to care and a superior patient experience.

Pastoral Care Program Support

$10,000 ongoing need

Bryn Mawr Hospital is committed to meeting the spiritual and faith-based needs of our diverse patient population. Our pastoral care team relies on generous donations from community organizations for supplies of prayer books, shawls, mats, rosaries and more, but rarely do those donations meet the need. We are seeking to establish a new Pastoral Care Fund with a minimum of $10,000 which our team can rely upon, as needed, to enhance and purchase supplies for our Quiet Rooms but also to give these resources free-of-charge to our inpatient population.

Healing Garden at Newtown Square

$10,000 annual need

Fully funded by philanthropy, the Healing Garden outside of the Cancer Center at our Newtown Square outpatient location, provides a therapeutic oasis for patients and loved ones. Annual maintenance and landscaping ensure that the walking path, waterfall pond, and seating areas continue to offer a soothing space for peace, reflection, and comfort.

Main Line Health gift opportunities

In addition to the above hospital-specific gift opportunities, the following Main Line Health fundraising priorities – representing needs that are being addressed at the system level – will also touch the lives of and promote the health and wellbeing of Bryn Mawr Hospital patients. Thank you for your consideration

Rooftop Farm at the MLH Women’s Specialty Center in King of Prussia

$400,000 to goal

The planned 6,500 square-foot rooftop farm will be used to facilitate nutrition education all the while providing a source of fresh food for families in the community suffering from food insecurity. A commitment of $400,000 would help us reach our fundraising goal and allow us to move forward with this sustainable addition to our King of Prussia location.

New Cardiac Rehabilitation Monitoring System

$212,000

Cardiac Rehab is a crucial extension of our renowned cardiac and interventional programs and is integral to our patients’ long-term success. All cardiac rehab patients are put on monitors when they are exercising in our rehab gyms. The monitoring system collects valuable data to inform a rehab regimen and treatment plan, tailored to the individual patient. We would like to upgrade our monitoring platform to leverage the latest medical advancements, optimize patient care and enhance interoperability. A commitment of $212,000 could upgrade Main Line Health’s monitoring systems across our Cardiac Rehab programs at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Lankenau Medical Center, Paoli Hospital and Riddle Hospital.

Bridge Milk Program Take-Home Extension

$60,000 annual need

Expanding on the success of our Human Milk Program in our NICUs, MLH has recently rolled out a Bridge Milk Program for well-babies on our maternity units. This new initiative offers families seeking to exclusively breastfeed with access to supplementary donor milk during their brief stay post-partum in circumstances where babies may not be receiving adequate supply from their mother due to issues with latching and feeding, the mother’s condition or the baby’s condition. Funding would enable us to extend the supply of donor milk for financially needy families, for a few days beyond discharge, helping to bridge the gap to the mother’s own sufficient milk supply for a slightly longer period of time.
